FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

As your wedding day approaches, one of the most important decisions you can make is deciding on a photographer for your big day. With so many options out there, I’m honoured that you have considered Ironrose to document your wedding!

Often couples have quite a few questions, here are a few most common questions and answers.

Click on the question to see the answer.

  • DO YOU SHOOT DIGITAL OR FILM?

I shoot digital using Nikon. All photographs are taken in colour and some will be changed into black and white during editing. I put a lot of time and effort into the editing of your special photographs and you will receive them in a variety of colour and black & white.

  • DO YOU WORK WITH AN ASSISTANT?

Yes I do. My assistant is a great help during weddings, she helps to carry equipment, holds reflectors and makes sure that we don't run over time. She also second shoots during the ceremony and at the reception so that I don't miss anything.

  • DO YOU AND YOUR ASSISTANT NEED A PLACE TO SIT AT THE RECEPTION?

After 7-9 hours of shooting we'd love a place to sit to rest our feet. I kindly ask that you please book a meal for both of us. We don't mind eating with other suppliers and are usually busy shooting and not at a table.

  • HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED FOR THE PHOTOS ON THE WEDDING DAY?

I will do my best to work around your schedule, but for the best results, I will need the following:

    - Decor shots: 20 - 30  mins

I like to do this before I come to the bride, by the time I arrive at the reception,  most of the guests are already there. If at all possible, please ask your florist / stylist to have the reception area ready about 1 hour before I start photographing the bride (exact time to be discussed closer to the wedding).

    - Bridal preparation, detail &  portraits before the ceremony: 1hr to 2 hrs

Brides, please be strict with your hair and make-up people. In my experience, they so often seem to run over time and it adds to unnecessary stress. I would advise that your hair and make-up is done at least 1hr 30 mins before we have to leave for the ceremony. I'm  sure that you'd like to have your bridal prep shots done when you have make-up on so that you look your best in your photos. Once your hair is done and make-up almost done, I'll take a few shots of your make-up artist in action. Try to have your make-up done in an area with a lot of light. By having everyone's hair and  make-up ready early it also means that you can have some gorgeous shots of yourself getting into your dress with all your bridesmaids dressed and looking great. Once you're all dressed up, there will be time to take some great pics of you and your bridesmaids without the stress of running late!

    - Groom preparation, detail & portraits (if time allows & the boys are getting ready within a reasonable distance to the bride): 15 - 20 mins

    - Ceremony: 30 mins to 1 hr (or as long as the duration of the ceremony)

I try not to move around too much during the ceremony, but please let me know beforehand if the officiant has any restrictions in terms of the photography.

    - Family and Group shots: 20 - 35 mins

I like to focus on immediate family during this time - mom's, dad's, brother's, sister's and grandparents. Time doesn't always allow to capture the extended family, but I make sure to take many candid photographs throughout the day. Keep your family photos to a list of 8-10 groups to most. Please remember to provide me with a list prior to the wedding.

    - Bridesmaids & Groomsmen: 15 - 20 mins

I like to take as many as possible before the ceremony of the bride & her bridesmaids and groom & his groomsmen before the ceremony, so that I can quickly after the family shots take some formals of the bridesmaids & groomsmen together.

    - Couple photos: 1 hr  to 1hr 30 mins

For best results these should be taken during the daylight hours, even better if you have the hour before sunset. You'll treasure these photos forever, so I like to make sure that you don't feel rushed). If you'd like to know what time the sun will set on your wedding day, have a look at this website to give you an idea - timeandate.com

    - Reception:

Start of reception until all formalities are done, once again depending on your package/collection chosen. (I try to stay until

9:45 pm the latest, but will make a plan to fit around your schedule, depending on your chosen package/collection). A good tip is to cut the cake before opening the dance floor so that your guests can enjoy the dancing once all formalities are done.

  • WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO TAKE THE COUPLE PHOTOS?

Lighting plays an extremely important role in taking good photographs. Make sure to plan your wedding so that there is enough natural light for the couple photo session. Keep in mind that the sun sets earlier in the Winter months than in the Summer. Below is a basic guideline:

January to April: between 4pm and 6pm

May to October: between 3pm and 5:30pm

November to December: between 4pm and 6:30pm

  • DO YOU TAKE TABLE PHOTOS?

I prefer not to have to interrupt guests while they are eating or drinking to take photographs, they don't result in the best of shots. I do suggest dedicating a special area, away from the food for those photos where I will take a few group shots there during the evening.

  • DO YOU USE SPECIAL LIGHTING EQUIPMENT?

The best shots are usually taken in natural light, when necessary though, for example during the reception, I will use a flash. One of the best things you can do though for good reception shots is make sure that there is a lot of light in the reception area.

  • DO YOU OFFER ALBUMS?

Yes. Various albums are included in my set collections. These are professionally designed and printed.

Once all the photographs are edited you'll receive a link to your photos so that you can choose your favourites from each part of the day. Once you've chosen your favourites and the layout is done, a digital proof (PDF) of your album layout will be sent to you for approval. I allow only 3 sets of changes.

  • CAN YOU TENTATIVELY HOLD A DATE FOR US?

Unfortunately not. A non-refundable booking fee, as per the specified collection/package as well as a completed booking form are required to confirm your booking. First booking fee secures, as a number of clients I see share the same date.

  • HOW DO WE MAKE A BOOKING?

Send a message using the form on the contact page - please give me at least 48 hours to reply.

Wait for a reply regarding the pricing and availability.

You will receive a  booking form to fill in and send back to me.

Once I've received your form, wait for a confirmation e-mail and invoice.

Pay the 25% non-refundable booking fee to secure your date. We are booked to take some gorgeous photos for you!

  • HOW DOES PAYMENT WORK?

A non-refundable booking fee of 25% of your chosen collection is due upon booking.

The remaining 75% is due 14 days before the wedding. I do offer a monthly payment system that allows you the luxury of paying off your wedding photography in smaller stress free amounts. The low down payment takes the stress out of booking any of Ironrose's services with just a small booking fee up front. While most photographers require half of your entire package simply to reserve a date, along with a hefty balance due right before your big day, I believe in making even your payments a pleasant experience and work with you every step of the way.

Please contact me for some more details.

  • WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

In Centurion, Pretoria. I do however travel for shoots & weddings. 50 km one way is included in all the collections.

Please contact me if you'd like some more info on travel costs for your destination wedding. Flights, accommodation, as well as car hire is required for weddings out of Gauteng (if applicable).

  • HOW DO WE GO ABOUT MEETING WITH YOU?

I'm available to meet up with clients at a coffee shop close to the studio in Centurion, on a Wednesday or Thursday  afternoon or evening,  just for a casual chat to get to know you and show you some samples and albums. Please send me an e-mail to arrange a meeting.

About 2-3 weeks before your wedding I like to touch base with an e-mail or meet with you again to discuss the final arrangements and wedding time line.

  • HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET OUR PHOTOGRAPHS AFTER THE WEDDING?

This will depend on how busy I am, but usually time needed to finish all the photo production will take a minimum of 8 - 12 weeks.

Albums can take an additional 3 weeks. This will also depend on the time it takes for you to get back to us with regards to album changes.

Kindly note that weddings during November & December will require an additional 4 weeks production time due to our taking a well-deserved break over the holiday season.

It's very important to me to spend time on all the details so that your photos are at their very best when you receive them.  Showcasing the best images of your special day  through professional editing and retouching will take some time.

  • HOW MANY PHOTOGRAPHS CAN WE EXPECT?

The amount of photographs you receive depends on the package you choose as well as the time schedule for the day. I don't really like to put a number on the photographs I give to clients, but if a photograph is good enough, it will be put on your disc. I believe in quality rather than quantity, but you can usually expect 300 + photographs. Each and every photograph you receive on your disc will have been retouched personally by myself (Barbara)

  • CAN WE HAVE THE RAW/UNEDITED PHOTOGRAPHS?

Unfortunately, I do not give out unedited photographs.

The RAW/unedited photographs are not what makes my style. The unedited photographs PLUS editing is what gives my work the uniqueness and characteristics that define me as an artist. I also want to ensure that I give you only the best possible images.
